Stacy Kidd Interview
Stacy Kidd is one of just a handful Producers that stay strong to their personal style and taste for more than 10 years now, providing funky and soulful housemusic independent of hypes and trends..
Born 1972 and grown up in Chicago, Stacy Kidd has made himself a strong reputation within the housebusiness. After several releases together with Paul Johnson on Dance Mania in the mid-90s he soon came in touch with the most important houselabels like Basement Boys, Tony Humphries Yellorange, Dust Traxx, Defected and Kenlou (MAW), just to new a few. Today Stacy Kidd fills clubs worldwide with his special blend of uplifiting housesounds.
His productions style is distinctive, always combining soulful elements with bumping und jacking beats. When watching his discography one will recognize that there are absolutely no frailties, just strong, true and straight forward funky housemusic.
Since 2002 Stacy Kidd runs his own production company “Underground Elements Productions“. He also works for Warner Brothers.
His latest album produced with Tai Davis “Unpredictable” again shows his fellowship to Housemusic and diversity at once!

Recently I had the chance to ask Stacy Kidd a few questions:
Subdialectic: Your first productions came out on Dance Mania together with Paul Johnson. Which main influences are responsible for your step into music business?
Stacy Kidd: Well I was producing when I met Paul Johson and we just connected and he asked me to be on a record with him on Dance Mania and thats how it happened.
Subdialectic: When did you first officially switch to the more funky side of Housemusic? Was it with “Somethin 4 the Kidds”?
Stacy Kidd: Well I always loved funky House so I wanted to do a Disco Style EP. So I came up with “Something 4 the Kidds”.
Subdialectic: You worked with labels such as MAW, Defected, Basement Boys, Yellorange and Moody and always remained faithful to your funky and soulful style. Is this your formula for success?
Stacy Kidd: Well I always stayed to those styles because thats what I love. Techno, Electro and the rest of the styles are cool, but I love the funky, soulful style of House so what ever Label I connect with I try to bring my style with there and stay true to me.
Subdialectic: I discovered the slogan “If it aint soulful it aint house” on your website. Do you like the Electro-House Sound especially from European Producers in the recent years and did you recognize this hype in big clubs in the US as well?
Stacy Kidd: Well, Electro is big in a lot of parts of the states, but all states have its style within, I never been a fan of Electro but I have heard some tracks that were kind of cool.
Subdialectic: Sampling gets more criminalized, what do you think about that development and does it have an effect on the development of Housemusic?
Stacy Kidd: Well Samples are everywhere and the great thing about samples is thats where it all started, from old Disco records. So to me its cool you just have to take a sample and do something with it no one else thought of, or just make it better then what u got it from. So I think its a big part of Housemusic because if it wasnt for the style of music I sample. I wouldnt be in the business because those records made me want to produce.
Subdialectic: How do you handle the use of single Samples? Sample Clearing is an expensive affair for independent musicians nower days… Perhaps you have a hint for other house producers.
Stacy Kidd: Well if you notice most parts dont get the samples cleared, but most of the time if you sample something and it dont makes any money then its not a problem. The problem comes when you sample something and it blows up, that when the artist may come after you, but the way I see it, is that if it blows up its cool to give them a part of what it made, because without that sample that song maybe wouldnt have made it big. So I just take the chances.
Subdialectic: What are your interests beside the music?
Stacy Kidd: I love travelling, Basketball, shopping and spending time with my family.
Subdialectic: Are there any specific plans for the future?
Stacy Kidd: In the future there are a few people I am trying to do some work with, like Stevie Wonder! I am working on that as we speak!
Subdialectic: Sounds very promising! Thanks very much for the interview!
Stacy Kidd: Thank you & House 4 Life!
